Walgreens 3/15-3/22

by Nicole on March 15, 2009

I had some register rewards that were set to expire today so I headed to Walgreens after reviewing Frugal RI Mama’s coupon match-ups. Please check her awesome site out to see how to get cheap deodorant and Dove products!

I did 1 transaction and got the following products:

1. Listerine mouthwash (on sale in a 3 for $9 promotion and get $6 in register rewards back. I also had coupon from today’s paper for $3 off when you buy Listerine, Reach floss and a Reach toothbrush)

2. Reach Ultra-clean dental floss (see above)

3. Reach Ultra-clean toothbrush (see above)

4. Rimmel Sexy Curves Mascara (on sale for $7.79, had coupon for FREE product from April’s All You Magazine)

5. Rimmel eyeliner (Wags is having BOGO free Rimmel deal this week)

6. Vidal Sasson Ecosystems Hairdryer (on sale for $19.99 and get back $10.00 in register rewards)

7. Wet Ones (on sale for $3.19, used in-ad coupon to make it $1.99 then used $.75 off coupon from paper)

I wasn’t happy with the cashier – she couldn’t get the cash register to mark the mascara for free and also the eyeliner for free. She ended up telling me it went through but it didn’t, so I will likely return the eyeliner this week. I ended up spending $6.29 more than I wanted which would have made this a FREE trip otherwise!

Subtotal before coupons was $46.26. I used the $3 off coupon on the Listerine and Reach products, got the mascara for FREE ($7.79 off) even though the cashier was only supposed to give me up to $6.47 for it, used the in-ad coupon for $1.20 off the Wet Ones, used the $.75 coupon for the Wet Ones, used $13.50 in register rewards from previous trips and paid $22.95 out of pocket. I got back $16 in register rewards ($10 from hairdryer, $6 from Listerine and Reach products) though and I really needed a new hair dryer!

I am getting more and more irritated with the cashiers at Walgreens. I try to be really polite and friendly and make my transactions easy to complete. More often than not lately I’ve noticed they just set aside the coupons that beep and then hand them back to me at the end. Any attempts to get the coupons taken off are met with resistance. I just returned $30 worth of Dove products because the register reward wouldn’t print. I was informed that I must have picked the wrong items. She didn’t want me to use the $2 off Ritz cracker coupon because the smaller packages were 2/$1.99. Even after she called the manager and he told her I COULD use the coupon and that she needed to just adjust it to $1.99 instead of the $2.00 she still didn’t think I should be able to do it and wasn’t shy about telling the MANAGER that it wasn’t right. I could go on and on but I’m sure you get the idea. It makes me wonder if this is a corporate wide training issue? The managers usually are nice and are willing to work with me and I’ve been assured by the managers that I’m not doing anything wrong. It just makes for a frustrating experience. I also worry that it seems shady when I return items that ‘should’ have triggered a register reward or return items I used coupons on. I don’t want to wreck it for anyone else so I try to play by the rules!

Anyway, thanks for all your tips and scenarios, it really helps!

I thought the Rimmel coupon said it was good only at Walmart.
Although I did have a similar problem during their b1/g1 deal with Revlon. The cashier ended up adjust the price of both so the one would be free.
Such a hassle sometimes.

I had read on slickdeals and a full cup that Walgreens was honoring the free Rimmel coupons (yes, the coupon did say Walmart on it) so I tried!

Hi Nicole, thank’s for the tips, I came here via the link from Deal Seaking Mom. I’m new to all this RR thing. I didn’t realize that if i bought two of the Speedsticks(1.99 with $1 RR), i’d only get one RR, not two. I also bought the purex, with the buy 1 get 1 free deal, though I forgot to check for coupons first. Duh.
I paid for it all (14.40) with a $10 RR from last week’s Huggies deal. I’m wondering whether I can return the items and have them ring it up again, with Manufacturer’s coupons, which would save me $2 on the Purex.
So i guess, my short question is, what happens when you try to return something bought with RR?

Hi Savmom: I would just bring the receipt and your coupons back to the store and let them know that you forgot to use them but want the credit. Will the total less the coupons still be over $10? It needs to be for you to use those Register Rewards. Many times they can just adjust the total and refund you the money or issue a store credit. This used to happen to me when I didn’t coupon as much and would forget that I was holding coupons in my hand until I tried to load the groceries in the car and would have to go back in to customer service!
