Still Loving My Prepaid American Express Card

by Nicole on August 16, 2011

I first told you all about American Express’ new prepaid card before I left for the BlogHer conference in San Diego a couple of weeks ago.  I had used it a couple of times and was excited to figure it all out! Then I went to BlogHer and blogged from the conference to tell you about how much I was LOVING the convenience and security of the prepaid card!

I’m now back from the conference and am happy to report that I continue to LOVE the card and use the card even though I’m no longer traveling!

First of all, I do use credit cards.  I know there are a lot of financial experts, etc that do not advocate the use of credit cards but used properly (i.e. paying balances in FULL each month), credit cards can actually help earn you money! I have always paid off my credit card bill in full each month, I’m just hardwired to not spend more than I have.  But I know this isn’t so easy for many people and that’s why credit cards get such a bad rap.

The prepaid card gives you the best of both worlds – you can only use the money that you put on the card so you can’t ever spend more than you have.  But you have an actual credit card to use if you don’t have cash or need a card for whatever purpose.  This American Express prepaid card can also help to teach a teenager (or adult even!) more fiscal responsibility.

The other great reasons to have this card is that it’s FREE, comes with that awesome American Express customer service you’ve probably heard about, and it’s super easy to use.  You just add cash to the card from a bank account, other American Express account or from a Money Pak that adds instant money to the card.

I was happy to use this card while traveling – it gave me complete peace of mind which is an awesome thing in my crazy world.  Thanks, American Express!

American Express gave me money to put on the card so I could blog about my experiences.  My opinions remain my own.

That’s a great option for those looking for an alternative to using cash. I will advise though (I just learned this) that for those – like me- who want to rebuild credit, these sorts of things will do nothing for that endeavor.
