Fight Hunger with Walmart

by izea on April 8, 2012

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Walmart Foundation for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I love companies that give back and this fight hunger initiative with Walmart is a great one! Did you know that more than 50 million Americans do not know where their next meal will come from? I think many of us take what we have for granted and have stocked pantries and refrigerators without a second thought.  Hunger is a real feeling for many Americans and unemployment plays a huge role in hunger…so how can we help them?

Here’s where Walmart comes in.  Walmart is working with Feeding America and four of the most recognizable food brands in America- ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg’s – in a nationwide Fighting Hunger Together initiative from Monday, April 9 through April 30. Consumers can join the fight against hunger in-store or through Facebook.

Between April 9th and April 30th Walmart will be hosting a Facebook campaign where fans can rally support for communities in need of hunger relief. Vote among 200 communities with the highest unemployment rate as determined by a Department of Labor Report (found here: Walmart will donate a total of $2 million to the 21 communities receiving the most support: $1 million to the winner and $50,000 each to the 20 runners-up. Winning communities will be announced May 1st.

The Fighting Hunger Together initiative is expected to generate 43 million meals for families in need.

I looked through the list of communities you can vote for and wasn’t surprised to see my community on there – Port St Lucie, FL with an unemployment rate of 13.3%.  This is so high and sad.  I will be voting for my home community as I suspect many of you will as well.  Imagine being able to bring $1 million to your community in need!

So don’t forget to Vote to fight spring hunger with Walmart  on Facebook.  You can also go in-store between April 9 and April 30 and participate in Fighting Hunger Together. By purchasing select products from ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft and Kellogg’s, you can donate meals to Feeding America or Action for Healthy Kids, a nonprofit fighting childhood hunger. Check out in-store signage and packaging to make a purchase and help make a difference today!
