Every where I go there are the ubiquitous fall mums, in oranges and yellows and purples. They are gorgeous and the sign of cool weather and Halloween and Thanksgiving. Look at these, who wouldn’t want to bring them home?

But I feel kind of sad when I see them at the end of the season – dried up and cast aside – their blooms all gone and forgotten because the types that we buy are generally annuals. But there is a whole group in this flower family that are perennials that you can buy once and enjoy year after year. Among many others I present to you the aster:

In my experience, asters have more of a wild flower look about them, a little longer, a little sparser, but just as vivid in color as mums and they are a fall bloomer. They take practically no care (just cut the dead stalks back) and they grow back the next fall. They are a beautiful plant that keeps on giving. If you are even a minimal gardener, I suggest you try them out. Then you can cross one more thing off your fall to-do list and save a few dollars every year!

I started Nicole's Nickels in February 2009 to bring all of the great deals I was finding to my friends and family and then it took off! Since then I've continued my full-time day job as an attorney while blogging in the evenings and on weekends. Nicole's Nickels has evolved into a site that lets you know about great new products and services! I help my clients during the days at the non-profit I work for and then my Nicole's Nickels readers learn about the best new products for their families! I live in south/central Florida and have 2 cute dogs (see their picture under "mascots") and an amazing husband who has a spunky 6 year old we get to spend a lot of time with.
