Holiday Hopping!

by Pennie on November 15, 2012

A friend of mine posted this cartoon (do they still call them that?) on Facebook:

It made me laugh. Hard.  Because I kind of feel exactly the same as that turkey.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a Major Fan of Christmas. Always have been, always will be.  I love the lights and the shopping and the glitter and the bells and the presents and the music and the food…well just about everything about it.  Christmas is a huge deal in my house.  And every year, the day AFTER Thanksgiving, I start putting up decorations.  I have more ornaments than will fit on one tree.  I have ornaments that date back to when I was a kid.  I have ornaments that I made, that my daughter made and that my grandson helped to make.  Not a year goes by that I don’t get some new decoration.

When my daughter was younger, I did special package wrappings, beautiful bows and ribbons, hand painted designs, glitter outlined scenes, all sorts of interesting and creative things.  One year she got a package with a winter scene complete with mounds of snow, a frozen pond and ice skaters!  I’m not telling you this to brag, just to show you how much I love Christmas.

And yet, retailers have stretched the Christmas season so long that I start seeing Christmas decorations before Halloween is past!  It makes me kind of crazy and a little mad.  I think the magic of the holiday is best felt when there is a little more mystery to it.  By the time the young, Santa loving crowd gets to December they are worn out from seeing things and wanting things and waiting and waiting and waiting.  It’s just too much for them.  Parents are sick of seeing it all in the stores and listening to their kids asking for a gazillion toys and hearing “Grandma got run over By a Reindeer” a skabillion (yes, that is my very own made up word) times on the in-store music system.  ENOUGH I say!

Let’s pass a law that says we can’t start celebrating Christmas until Thanksgiving is done.  Let Tom Turkey have his day.  Oh, and while we are passing laws, can we abolish Daylight Savings Time?  It really messes with my sleep!

I AGREE with you 100%. I’m sick of seeing Christmas at halloween. It’s just not right! The stores should start putting Christmas stuff out the day after turkey day. I LOVE Christmas too!My fave is putting up lots & lots of lights outside my apt.I put them on my patio, around my front door, kitchen window. This yr I’m putting some around my bdrm window on the inside. I like to decorate usually the 1st of Dec. I don’t get around very good due to major back issues & neuropathy. I get my daughter and future son-in-law to put up lights and other things I can’t do. I always told my daughter what Christmas is really about, the birth of Christ.
I think someone needs to do something about the decorations going up later, but you & I know that’ll never happen. LOL!!
I love reading your post! Happy Thanksgiving & God Bless You & Your Family :)
