Every year I make Thanksgiving at my parents house for 15-20 people! It is quite the undertaking and some years I have more help than others. If my brother’s mother-in-law is coming I can bank on her making a bunch of side dishes and concentrate on the main dishes. My friend from law school always brings the desserts with her – she is a phenomenal baker! I always make the turkey and the ham and my famous spicy artichoke dip and corn casserole for sure.
Since it’s my family and closest friends if something goes wrong it’s not the end of the world. But I am a perfectionist and always want everything to taste and look great! One of my best tips is to work backwards from when you want to serve dinner. I make a list of how long each item will need in the oven and make a schedule working backwards from when I need everything done! If I stick to the schedule then I’m good!
Another great tip is to make your shopping list divided into areas of the store. For example, I put all of the fruits and vegetables in one section of my list and then canned goods in another. This will save you steps in the store and helps so you don’t forget anything!
I think the most important thing to remember is that Thanksgiving shouldn’t be too stressful! It’s the being together that counts, not whether or not everything is absolutely perfect. Right?
