I love traditional Jewish cooking. It reminds me of my childhood and how my grandmother cooked for us. I do know a lot of our family’s recipes and have shared some of them on this site but I have a lot more to learn! Since Noah is half Jewish and half Baptist/Cuban it’s important for him to learn about both cultures and since he’s not with us full time I have a lot to teach him!
This Mama Doni cookbook called Get Cooking: A Jewish American Family Cookbook is great! It has spiral binding which is great for opening up completely and being able to use while cooking in the kitchen. The recipes aren’t all for Jewish food in this cookbook though! There are recipes like Thanksgiving Cole Slaw and Loco Coco Pumpkin Pie for secular holidays like Thanksgiving and then more traditional recipes for Jewish holidays like challah for Shabbat and latkes for Chanukah. My favorite part are the ways she has made traditional Jewish recipes non-traditional like Vanilla Rice Krispie Kugel for Yom Kippur and matzah pizza for Passover!
The book is colorful and inviting for children and adults and this has become my go-to cookbook lately! Noah is able to help me by reading the recipe and assembling the necessary ingredients! The accompanying CD is so much fun! It has some very catchy songs like “Latke Man” and “Falafull” and Noah was humming along right away!
From Rosh Hashanah to Thanksgiving, Chanukah to Fourth of July, the Jewish American calendar is overflowing with chances to celebrate, savor good food, and get down and party with family and friends. Get Cooking! A Jewish American Family Cookbook & Rocki”‘ Mama Doni Celebration takes readers through a year of holidays with fun, “menschy” activities for every season and recipes that give American cuisine a Jewish twist, such as “Sweet P”tato Knish” for Thanksgiving and “Judah Mac ‘n’ Cheese Squares” and “Fill-In-the-Blank Latkes” for Chanukah.

The Rockin’ Mama Doni Celebration CD gives Get Cooking! a voice, with songs, musical interludes, and jokes, including a plenty of Mama Doni “fan favorites” plus 18 new tracks that have never before been released on CD. “Falafafull,” “Challa Day,” “Matzah Pizza,” “Latke Man,” and more will have everyone dancing in the aisles, around the kitchen, and all through the house.
