Leftover Ham and Split Pea Soup with Hurst Beans and Giveaway

by Nicole on December 18, 2012

I love split pea soup and homemade split pea soup is the best! I only make it a few times a year since we only have ham (with a bone) a few times a year! Split pea soup from a hambone is the best kind! I used my leftover ham bone with meat still on it from Thanksgiving.  After Thanksgiving I just threw it in a Ziploc and froze it and so that’s what I’m using.  This will be perfect with the leftover hambone from your Christmas ham as well!

Hurst Beans are just $2.99 for 8 full servings – this is a budget meal that tastes great! You can win a $100 giftcard by submitting a photo of Hurst Beans on their Facebook giveaway under submit a photo! Think of all of the delicious meals you could make with the giftcard!

I love the smell when the ham stock is simmering – yummy! It’s so easy to use the Hurst beans to make the soup since the beans are already seasoned! Plus each bag comes with an easy soup recipe right on it! I made the soup how I always make it but their recipe looks really good too! Here’s my recipe!

Leftover Ham and Split Pea Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 Hambone with meat still on it
  • 2 bags of Hurst Split Pea Soup beans
  • 1 large onion, chopped very small
  • 1 small bag of baby carrots, chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 stalks of celery, chopped very small
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cover the hambone with water in a large pot.
  2. Bring to a boil and then simmer for several hours.
  3. The meat should come easily off the bone and the broth should be a dark yellow.
  4. Remove meat from broth and skim off fat.
  5. Dice usable meat into small pieces.
  6. Add back to pot, and add onion, celery, carrots and garlic to pot.
  7. Bring to boil.
  8. Cover and simmer 30 minutes.
  9. Add both bags of beans.
  10. Bring to boil.
  11. Cover and simmer at least 1 hour.
  12. Check consistency of soup and once it's right add the seasoning packet and salt and pepper to taste.
