I love split pea soup and homemade split pea soup is the best! I only make it a few times a year since we only have ham (with a bone) a few times a year! Split pea soup from a hambone is the best kind! I used my leftover ham bone with meat still on it from Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving I just threw it in a Ziploc and froze it and so that’s what I’m using. This will be perfect with the leftover hambone from your Christmas ham as well!
Hurst Beans are just $2.99 for 8 full servings – this is a budget meal that tastes great! You can win a $100 giftcard by submitting a photo of Hurst Beans on their Facebook giveaway under submit a photo! Think of all of the delicious meals you could make with the giftcard!
I love the smell when the ham stock is simmering – yummy! It’s so easy to use the Hurst beans to make the soup since the beans are already seasoned! Plus each bag comes with an easy soup recipe right on it! I made the soup how I always make it but their recipe looks really good too! Here’s my recipe!
Ingredients
- 1 Hambone with meat still on it
- 2 bags of Hurst Split Pea Soup beans
- 1 large onion, chopped very small
- 1 small bag of baby carrots, chopped
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 2 stalks of celery, chopped very small
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cover the hambone with water in a large pot.
- Bring to a boil and then simmer for several hours.
- The meat should come easily off the bone and the broth should be a dark yellow.
- Remove meat from broth and skim off fat.
- Dice usable meat into small pieces.
- Add back to pot, and add onion, celery, carrots and garlic to pot.
- Bring to boil.
- Cover and simmer 30 minutes.
- Add both bags of beans.
- Bring to boil.
- Cover and simmer at least 1 hour.
- Check consistency of soup and once it's right add the seasoning packet and salt and pepper to taste.
I made this soup this weekend and we have been eating it all week for dinner with some crusty bread!
