04/30 Pinterest Pin(s) of the Week: April is Celebrated…

by Pennie on April 30, 2013

For many reasons, among them are these handful:

  • National Poetry Month – To celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture
  • Mathematics Awareness Month – To recognize the importance of mathematics
  • National Pecan Month – a time to celebrate the “All American Nut” for its delicious taste and numerous health benefits
  • National Welding Month – Welding is the secret ingredient that keeps today’s world together
  • National School Library Month – The celebration of school librarians and their programs

But for many (especially parents), April is Autism Awareness Month, which was established in the 1970s to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism. To participate in that need for awareness I thought I would show you a few pins that have popped up on Pinterest regarding Autism.  Just click the picture to get to the place it came from:

One last bit of info: Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills.  I don’t remember there being an Austism diagnosis when I was young, I think most people who showed signs of the disorder were misdiagnosed and treated very poorly.

Now the diagnosis is referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder, because of the broad variety of ways a child could be affected developmentally. If you know anyone who thinks or knows that their child is on the Spectrum, please be supportive of them and patient with their child.
