Adults and children alike love the little precocious 5-year-old girl who loves to read and has so much determination to make her way in the world. One of the most anticipated shows of the season, Matilda The Musical opened April 11th at the Shubert Theatre in NYC.
Matilda the Musical is a written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. It is based on the children’s novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. Matilda is Dahl’s beloved story of a wonderful little girl with great imagination and not so great parents. Matilda overcomes family and school obstacles and helps her teacher, “Miss Honey”, to reclaim her life.
Gabriel Ebert and Lesli Margherita (who play Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood) reveal that it takes some pretty good acting to play the delightfully awful pair. Because the Wormwoods are so negligent of Matilda, Margherita and Ebert were careful not to become too familiar with the 4 young actresses playing their daughter throughout rehearsals. “Being cruel and daft is essential to Matilda being the hero,” Ebert explains, so that despite the crowd’s disapproval, the parents’ treatment of Matilda allows audience members to relate to the heroine more deeply.
