Reducing Household Odors with Filtrete

by Nicole on May 31, 2013

I know air filters aren’t something a lot of us think about regularly and may even be a “husband” chore in most of our homes but when Filtrete sent me their Odor Reduction filter to try out my interest was piqued! In Florida it is very humid and our house has a tendency to be dusty so we try to change the filters our very regularly.  It helps keep our air conditioning bills down since they can get quite high with the heat!

Filtrete Air Filters come in a variety of models and sizes and you can get them for as low as $3 each from stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s.  The Odor Reduction variety that I tried have an MSRP of $15.99 which is super affordable given their capabilities! Filtrete filters capture dust and other allergens to make the air in your home safer to breathe and they also promote airflow in your unit which helps maintain a more consistent temperature in your home and make your air conditioner or heater run more efficiently which means a lower bill to you!

These Odor Reduction Filtrete filters are a great way to keep your home smelling perfect.  Traditional air fresheners release volatile organic compounds into the air and may contribute to poor air quality.  You might be trying to help by using them but you’re doing just the opposite! The Odor Reduction filters have a two-sided design where one side captures large airborne particles and the other side removes household odors.  The filter is most effective on cooking smells, pet, mildew, etc. and lasts up to 3 months.

We change our filters every 2 months because our air conditioner pretty much runs 10 months per year here in Florida.  Those of you in more temperate climates can probably go the 3 months.  You’ll know when you need to change it, you can see the build up on the filter and during our summer months we sometimes change it every month.

Filtrete has a cool Healthy Home Remodel Contest going on through June 30, 2013 that you should definitely enter.  The grand prize is $30,000 worth of home inspections, repairs, and renovations by a Holmes Group (Mike Holmes, a renowned HBTV contractor) approved contractor. Four 1st prize winners will each get $5,000 cash to use for home repairs. To enter just go to the Filtrete Facebook page, like them, and then explain in 1,000 words or less why your house is in need of a healthy remodel and submit up to 2 pictures. There are official rules you’ll want to check out before entering as well.

We’ve always used Filtrete for allergy reasons, I didn’t know they had something like this! Definitely gotta try it out.
