As I was out mowing the lawn yesterday I got to thinking about how my yard is pretty blah. Since we moved in, all we’ve really done is cut down a boatload of trees and planted a few flowers and bushes (with limited success – NC clay is really thwarting my efforts).
I know that it is the middle of a hot, muggy summer (especially here in eastern NC), but I started thinking again about building a fire pit in the back yard. Currently, my back yard is lush green weeds, surrounded by lush green-leafed trees that grow like weeds. I don’t know what the trees are but I’ve never seen another tree grow so fast!
Anyway I like the idea of a fire pit and in New England I had one something like this (from Home Depot) which was nice enough and served the purpose but I’d prefer something a little more permanent.
It’s odd that fire pits seem to have become a thing in the past decade or so (sort of like “Man Caves”), because they have been around forever (cooking and whatnot). But now they are a leisure item. Off to Pinterest to see what designs I can find!
There are certainly prefabricated ones that I like. Check out this one from Jamie Durie Design. Not sure if is propane or gas but I love these that have the fire coming up through glass or rock! Of course it doesn’t hurt that this is sitting on a beautifully designed deck right beside a pool.
But I’m talking about something more like this one from The Harpster Home. Functional and a little utilitarian, kind of all you really need. Fairly easy DIY project (not counting having to haul the weight of the stones and rock).
This is a different shape but the same basic idea. A square fire pit from Divinely Gifted. Nice!
Darren Mathews created this in-ground fire pit. I like the idea of it, but it seems like one of those things that could be a hazard to have. This is not the finished product, but I think you get the idea.
Maybe it’s supposed to continue above ground like this one from The Dirty Loft!
From Always Chasing Life is one that is a combo of what I originally had but with some blocks for that sturdy look:
Here is a combo I LOVE!! Beach & fire pit in your backyard from Sunset.com
From Bow Hunting is this pretty awesome fire pit surrounded by swinging benches!
For the life of me, I can’t find the originator on this last fire pit, but still wanted to show it. It is exactly what I want in a fire pit. Stacked stone, on a wide gravel base with plenty of room for comfy seating. This looks like it came from a magazine; if anybody has the info on it, please let me know because I’d love to acknowledge the source. Can’t you imagine spending evening after evening out there?
All I need is some help to help me build it. Any volunteers? No?
Ahh, Pinterest, I love you so!
