10/15 Pinterest Pin(s) of the Week: Homemade Halloween Costumes

by Pennie on October 15, 2013

Two weeks before Halloween seems about the right time to start thinking about costumes.  When I was kid (way back in the stone age, before fire was discovered!) we always made costumes, nobody bought a Halloween costume.  If you were lucky, you had a parent that could sew who would help you whip up something fancy.  If you were not so lucky, you raided your closet, the linen closet, the kitchen or first aid kit and the dresser of anyone in the house who wore makeup, to come up with something scary, or funny or silly.  If not perfect, at least they were all originals!

I looked around on Pinterest and found some homemade costumes that seemed easy to make, and look pretty good and didn’t break the bank on getting accessories.  I’m going to start with a few that I found on Real Simple (a magazine I LOVE).

First off is this Yellow Duckling.  It’s cute, easy, visible in the dark and doesn’t block the kid’s view (no tripping).

I love this Shark!  So cute, makes kids a little scary, keeps them warm, and a cinch to make!

shark-costume_galThis Mermaid is great because it doesn’t bind the girl’s leg in a single tail. And it’s made out of tissue paper and cupcake liners!

This last one from Real Simple is a Turquoise Peacock.  Made with a tutu, straws, tissue paper, cupcake liners (who knew they were so versatile?) and pipe cleaners.  Easy and adorable!

Mom can easily be Rosie the Riveter!  Just a denim shirt and a red bandana!

Here’s a super easy Bat costume, all you need is an old or cheap black umbrella, some black clothes and a head band to make bat ears!

And lastly from  Cheerios and Lattes, the perfect family costume: S’Mores!
