Unexpected Joy

by Pennie on January 16, 2014

I ran into an old co-worker today.  Someone that made me laugh easily, someone to whom I was sort of a surrogate mom.  From the moment we met, we just clicked and had so much fun together in the work place.

She’s been living in NYC for a while with her mom, because she needed some time and support to figure out how to go forward with her life. I haven’t heard from her in months and months and months and I was certain that our paths would never cross again.

But today, out of the blue, there she was!  And she screamed my name and ran and hugged me and kissed me so hard that I almost fell over!  What a great feeling when someone shows you just how much they care for you.

We laughed and hugged and called each other inappropriate names and then we laughed some more!  How wonderful to feel so much joy and to feel it being reciprocated!

Sometimes in life our friendships drift apart and never drift back together.  You make an effort to keep in contact, but after a while that fades and eventually stops.  You remember them fondly but know that contacting them would just be awkward after so much time as passed.

But there are other people in your life who drift away, that you know if you saw or heard from them, it would be a joyous encounter.  You would catch up instantly and return to your close connection.  Today it felt like I had gotten a present from the past.  I can’t help but smile just thinking about it.

Is there someone in your life that you would love to connect with again?  After my experience today my advice is to call them.  Right now when you are thinking about them.  Surprise them and give yourself a gift.  It will feel like the warmth of a sunny Spring day!
